We had an absolutely amusing, enjoyable and entertaining experience when we went ‘Mile High’ last week. We loved the cheeky humour, the unique location and the scrumptious menu from Chef Oliver Templeton. This certainly was the best onboard catering we have ever received. First class the whole way! Don’t miss your chance to dine – Mile High.
Mile High is a travelling pop up supper club, offering an innovative and sensory rich series of ‘quick city breaks’ combining a menu inspired by the destination, top cocktails, music and theatre; the experience will be ‘taking off’ four times throughout 2013, passengers can book to ‘visit’ Göteborg, Beirut, Sicily and even Mozambique.
The Mile High experience is clearly inspired by the golden age of 1950s air travel, with a pinch of tongue-in cheek thrown in for good measure. We loved the fact that the air hosts/waiting staff seemed to take great joy in getting into character with some excellent accents slipping out, causing some sporadic giggles. From start to finish there was attention to detail; the departure lounge -home of Mile High’s airborne DJ Division, the bar where diners enjoyed ‘check in’ Campari cocktails and bar snacks, before embarking on Mile High’s foodie destination: Gothenburg, Sweden.
There were many authentic smiles throughout the evening and especially during dinner; as we looked down the long banquette style tables and rows of chairs, it was clear the diners (or passengers as we were referred to) were pretty much all joyously tucking into the 4 course menu, revelling in the entertaining service from the staff. I actually got my main course served by the Captain; apparently the plane was on auto pilot!
We ate: Pan-fried Scallops with Puréed Potato, Charred Spring Onions and Crispy Garlic, followed by Crayfish, Brown Shrimp, Smoked Bacon, Soured Cream, Dark Rye and Tarragon, then Chargrilled Elk with Golden Beetroot, Mushrooms, Dill and Cucumber Salad and rounded off with Lingonberry Ice Cream with Carrot Cake Crumble and Liquorice Meringue (a vegetarian menu was/ is available on request).
This was a stylish and amusing evening from start to finish, inclusive of the selected set styling, the cocktail offerings and even the Captain’s bar side drunken musings. The experience and flair of the team creating this event was apparent. Our only peeve was that the main course of Elk was pretty much room temperature (cold). We are well- aware of the challenges to get a large amount of plates out at the same time but I am sure the Elk would have tasted better – hot. However the dessert more than made up for it; the Carrot Cake Crumble with Lingonberry Ice Cream and Liquorice Meringue – sits undoubtedly on the top of my pud list this year! A winning combination of textures and flavours, it was very almost a plate licker. In fact dessert was so distracting we didn’t even know we had landed….
