We had a delightful dinner at The Brompton Bar and Grill, last week. This is a smooth, rather lovely and civilised local restaurant near The Brompton Cross – that was until they got the Absinthe out!


Eating out and entertaining comes in all forms, sometimes we want to sit back, get comfy with street food and trashy dishes, other times impressing is the key, then there are the times that you need a little of both and not too much of either. The Brompton Bar and Grill is ultimately a luxe neighbourhood restaurant and bar counter (with a simple basement event space – Absinthe Bar ) that suits all manner of entertaining endeavours.BROMPTON BAR & GRILL 1 BAR

BROMPTON BAR & GRILL  party bookingsFounded by Chef Francois O’Neill in 2009, it has gone from strength to strength and is a luxury local place to eat, drink and enjoy regular live music. The Brompton Bar and Grill is a historic site that has housed a restaurant for over 60 years. The chic décor of The Brompton Bar and Grill merges both the classic with the contemporary so effectively that it was awarded ‘The It Room’ Award at The Tatler Restaurant Awards in 2010. Sleek leather banquettes, a zinc topped bar and modern art pieces are combined with authentic Parisian sketches, crisp white tablecloths and windows looking out on the street, from where diners can watch the world go by. Seasonality is importance to the dining concept at The Brompton Bar and Grill, with menus changing on a weekly basis dishes have included Steak Tartare and the signature Brompton Fish Soup and mains such as: Grilled Calves Liver with Bacon, Mash and Onion Sauce, Grilled Halibut with Hollandaise or Salsa Verde and Honey and Soy Glazed Duck with Sesame Green Beans. Round off the perfect meal with delicious desserts including Apple and Blackberry Jelly with Damson Ripple Ice Cream, Rhubarb Crumble with Ginger Dessert, and the Brompton’s speciality, ‘Coupe de Churchill’. We certainly enjoyed our dinner, all dishes were well executed, simply presented and the service was flawless.


Finishing off the meal with Absinthe also makes for an impression with your guests. We really would like one of these contraptions to add to our table of event props.

There is also a set menu available from Monday to Saturday, with two courses for £15.50 and three courses for £18.50 The Brompton Bar and Grill’s diverse wine list offers an interesting selection of both Old and New World Wines and is extremely good value, with house wines starting at £16 for a bottle. There are also cocktails available.


Entertaining: Downstairs in the Absinthe Bar is private and comfortable space (although guests from the restaurant do have to pass by this space to use the facilities). The space can accommodate approx 30 guests dining and 45 guests for a standing reception. The basement also hosts monthly live music evenings, predominantly of the jazz variety, which compliments the sultry and relaxed feel of the space. We say start civilized then get that Absinthe contraption out and show those South Kensington –ites how to get down with the Green Fairy
